From the Pomerol appellation in Bordeaux, Petrus 1997 is a 100% Merlot wine with an alcohol content of 13.5%. The vintage emerged from a warm growing season recognised for yielding fruit characterised by supple tannins and an early harvest. This wine exhibits aromas of black cherries, truffle, and mulberry, reflecting the estate`s renowned blue clay terroir. The 1997 vintage is often overshadowed by its predecessors, yet has gained recognition for its approachable nature and fruit density. Petrus, historically a small 11.4-hectare estate, remains one of Bordeaux’s most esteemed wineries, known for its consistent quality and distinctive style.
93 Vinous
Saturated ruby-red. Brilliant nose features kirsch, dark berries, and iron scents, with an overlay of perfumed, spicy oak. Lush, sweet and fragrant in the mouth, with a sappy freshness; clearly made from low yields. Finishes with toothcoating but suave tannins and remarkable persistence; stains the palate with spicy bitter cherry and citric skin flavor. As with the '94, clearly the best wine in the Moueix portfolio on this day. Stephen Tanzer1st May 1996

The Perfect Pomerol?

Producing one of the most revered red wines in the world, Petrus was the first Pomerol estate to win a gold medal in the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878. Indeed, Petrus' world class reputation speaks for itself and it is often considered the pinnacle of Bordeaux' s Right Bank Pomerol appellation.

Spanning 11.7ha, the Petrus vineyards are characterised by their distinctive sticky blue clay soils, producing wonderfully powerful, complex wines with glorious aromatics and texture and an extraordinary capacity for aging. Almost always made from 100% Merlot, the style of Petrus is unique and in the best vintages often achieves levels of aromatic complexity, richness and silky texture that others simply cannot. Despite wonderfully warming levels of alcohol, this is a wine that is balanced by beautiful freshness.
