Pétrus 1993 is a full-bodied Merlot-based red wine produced in the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux. Pétrus is one of the rarest and most prized labels in Bordeaux. The 11.4ha property is located on a plateau on the highest part of Pomerol and is planted to 95% Merlot growing on clay soils. The grand vin is fermented in cement vats and aged in 100% new oak barrels for up to 28 months. Rich and concentrated, these wines should only be broached after a decade in bottle, while the best vintages may age well for many years more. "A truly classic Pétrus and comparable to the `88, `86 and `82. Showy and impressive with excellent use of new oak. It delivers loads of toasty coconut and chocolate flavours balanced by plum and blackberry notes. Incredible concentration for the vintage. Supple, long finish." James Suckling, 1996

The 1993 Petrus is a vintage that I have never been a particular fan of. Potent bell pepper notes on the tertiary nose are atypical for this Pomerol cru whilst the tannins are coarse and hard, something you do not associate with Petrus. Perhaps larger formats might have more to offer, but at the end of the day, there are plenty more enjoyable off-vintages out there. The Perfect Pomerol?

Producing one of the most revered red wines in the world, Petrus was the first Pomerol estate to win a gold medal in the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878. Indeed, Petrus' world class reputation speaks for itself and it is often considered the pinnacle of Bordeaux' s Right Bank Pomerol appellation.

Spanning 11.7ha, the Petrus vineyards are characterised by their distinctive sticky blue clay soils, producing wonderfully powerful, complex wines with glorious aromatics and texture and an extraordinary capacity for aging. Almost always made from 100% Merlot, the style of Petrus is unique and in the best vintages often achieves levels of aromatic complexity, richness and silky texture that others simply cannot. Despite wonderfully warming levels of alcohol, this is a wine that is balanced by beautiful freshness.
