Le Petit Mouton is the second wine from Château Mouton Rothschild, the iconic First Growth Bordeaux estate located in the commune of Pauillac. This release is from the 2020 vintage, a blend composed of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. The 2020 growing season in Bordeaux experienced a relatively mild winter, a warm, dry spring, and an early bud break. The summer started cool and damp but turned hot and dry in August. These conditions led to the production of small, concentrated grapes with intense flavours and exceptional quality.

The 2020 Le Petit Mouton has a seductive bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, cedar and pencil lead, seeming to gain precision in the glass—very classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet core of cassis and blackberry fruit, very composed and very pure. A cashmere-textured finish fans out gloriously. This is a seriously fine Pauillac for long-term cellaring (written before its identity was revealed). Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
93 Robert Parker
The 2020 Le Petit Mouton benefits from the fact that the grand vin this year derives almost exclusively from the estate`s core gravel terraces, meaning that many parcels that were included in, for example, the 2018 Mouton ended up in the Petit Mouton in 2020. Offering up aromas of cassis, cigar wrapper and violets, it`s medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with a broad attack and a layered, concentrated mid-palate. - William Kelley

Tasted blind. Deep crimson. Dark, pure, savoury and smoky. Oaky, too. Smells so pure despite the oak sweetness. Really fine tannins, extremely pure with tannic finesse. Harmonious, the power hidden under an elegant exterior. (JH)

Wine as Art

The prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild estate is home to the world-renowned First Growth of the same name, in addition to a second red wine, Petit Mouton and a white wine, made in smaller quantities, known as L'Aile d'Argent. Established in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, the Château pioneered the idea of bottling their own wine in the 1920s while other properties were still selling and exporting in barrel. A Second Growth until 1972, the winery was officially elevated to the high rank of Bordeaux classification in 1973 after much campaigning by the famous Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

Cabernet Sauvignon that takes pride of place in the wines of Mouton Rothschild, with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon always predominates in the Mouton red, giving the wine its rich tannins, wealth of aroma, flavour and superb ageing capacity. Meanwhile Merlot, an inseparable companion, brings suppleness, roundness and exceptional length.
