The elegant second wine from Château Mouton Rothschild. 20% Cabernet Franc, 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot. A dark red with a cherry tint, the wine has an ample, expressive nose that opens on attractive toast enhanced by red berry fruit, black cherry and a touch of spice. Full, round and substantial on the attack, it displays an elegant, rich and well-integrated structure, developing a generous, complete and nicely balanced palate on liquorice, cherry-stone and pepper notes. The powerful, richly flavoured and highly expressive finish of a top Pauillac in an excellent year.
The 2005 Le Petit-Mouton is a pretty wine, but it is also ready to drink. In 2005, Le Petit-Mouton has a higher percentage of Franc in the blend, which comes through in its lighter structure and overall profile. Time in the glass brings out pretty notes of cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and mint. Any remaining bottles need to be finished. Antonio Galloni1st April 2021

The prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild estate is home to the world-renowned First Growth of the same name, in addition to a second red wine, Petit Mouton and a white wine, made in smaller quantities, known as L'Aile d'Argent. Established in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, the Château pioneered the idea of bottling their own wine in the 1920s while other properties were still selling and exporting in barrel. A Second Growth until 1972, the winery was officially elevated to the high rank of Bordeaux classification in 1973 after much campaigning by the famous Baron Philippe de Rothschild.
Cabernet Sauvignon that takes pride of place in the wines of Mouton Rothschild, with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon always predominates in the Mouton red, giving the wine its rich tannins, wealth of aroma, flavour and superb ageing capacity. Meanwhile Merlot, an inseparable companion, brings suppleness, roundness and exceptional length.
