Peter Michael Ma Belle-Fille Chardonnay 2006 is a high-altitude white wine grown at nearly 600 metres elevation on the Peter Michael winery’s Knights Valley estate. This 2006 bottling is 100% barrel-fermented using native yeasts and aged sur lies for 12 months with weekly batonnage, resulting in a rich and multi-layered texture. It offers an opulent profile of poached apples, lemon curd and creme brulee, underpinned by a vivid mountain acidity and a persistent mineral streak. The vineyard’s marine-influenced climate and volcanic soils contribute to its remarkable aromatic intensity and structural depth. Now at a mature stage, the wine has developed complex tertiary notes of toasted nuts and spice while maintaining a crystalline clarity and an exceptionally long finish.

Bright greenish yellow. Knockout nose combines citrus peel, white peach, minerals, iodine, spices and creme brulee; I'd love to throw this into a Burgundy tasting. Rich, fat and sweet but with enough mineral spine to maintain its shape and freshness. With aeration, this very concentrated wine became juicier, brighter and more gripping. Finishes with a youthful bitter edge that really grabs hold of the palate. Includes a lot of fruit from the Hyde and Hudson clones, which produce tiny clusters.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2008

Inspired by the Médoc and Côte d'Or

Peter Michael Winery was founded by British businessman Sir Peter Michael in the early 1980s with a singular vision - to make wine in the terroir-driven tradition of Burgundy and Bordeaux, under the California sun and in California soil. The winery currently produce around fifteen wines using four varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Consistency and quality are the watchwords here - the wines are clearly inspired by the poise and precision of their Old World counterparts but can't help expressing an edge of Californian excess - ripe fruit abounds on the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir while the Cabernet Sauvignons have a density and concentration that many Bordelais would envy.
