The Peter Michael Le Moulin Rouge Pinot Noir Magnum 1998 is a notable expression from the renowned Peter Michael Winery, established in 1982 and recognised for its commitment to producing high-quality wines in California’s Fort Ross-Seaview AVA. This wine originates from a meticulously maintained single-vineyard, characterised by its unique gold ridge soil and proximity to the Pacific Ocean. The Pinot Noir grapes are hand-harvested and undergo fermentation with native yeasts, matured in French oak barrels. The 1998 vintage reveals complex layers of red fruit, subtle earthiness and a characteristic minerality, with a structure that suggests notable ageing potential.

Saturated medium ruby. Fascinating, vibrant aromas of wild strawberry, cranberry, pomegranate, blackberry and tea leaves. Juicy and densely packed; currently a bit dominated by a flavor of caramel oak and thus not especially fleshy. Black fruit and floral flavors emerge as the wine opens in the glass. A powerfully structured wine, finishing with substantial, dusty, oak-enhanced tannins.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2000

The 1998 Pinot Noir Le Moulin Rouge reveals tell-tale black cherry and raspberry characteristics, is deep and rich, but does not follow through in the finish. A medium-bodied wine with zesty acidity, it should drink well for 5-6 years.

Inspired by the Médoc and Côte d'Or

Peter Michael Winery was founded by British businessman Sir Peter Michael in the early 1980s with a singular vision - to make wine in the terroir-driven tradition of Burgundy and Bordeaux, under the California sun and in California soil. The winery currently produce around fifteen wines using four varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Consistency and quality are the watchwords here - the wines are clearly inspired by the poise and precision of their Old World counterparts but can't help expressing an edge of Californian excess - ripe fruit abounds on the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir while the Cabernet Sauvignons have a density and concentration that many Bordelais would envy.
