Peter Michael Winery is an iconic boutique producer of exquisite Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet made in the mould of the finest wines of Burgundy and Bordeaux. Le Moulin Rouge is a Pinot Noir made with grapes grown by the Pisoni family in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey County. The 2017 is open-knit and attractively perfumed with notes of red cherry, plum, wild strawberry and black tea. It is intense and rich on the palate yet displays admirable elegance and freshness.

The 2017 Pinot Noir Le Moulin Rouge Pisoni Vineyard is an attractive, pliant Pinot with tons of near to medium-term immediacy. There is plenty of the signature Peter Michael raciness, even if the Moulin Rouge doesn’t quite have the energy or vibrancy of the Sonoma Coast Pinots. Then again, we are at the southern edge of the Santa Lucia Highlands here. Winemaker Nick Morlet has coaxed a great deal of elegance, freshness and finesse from this site, where the wines are often a bit bigger.Antonio Galloni1st May 2019

Inspired by the Médoc and Côte d'Or

Peter Michael Winery was founded by British businessman Sir Peter Michael in the early 1980s with a singular vision - to make wine in the terroir-driven tradition of Burgundy and Bordeaux, under the California sun and in California soil. The winery currently produce around fifteen wines using four varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Consistency and quality are the watchwords here - the wines are clearly inspired by the poise and precision of their Old World counterparts but can't help expressing an edge of Californian excess - ripe fruit abounds on the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir while the Cabernet Sauvignons have a density and concentration that many Bordelais would envy.
