The Peter Michael Le Moulin Rouge Pinot Noir 2011 is a single-vineyard red from the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA in California`s Sonoma Coast. Sourced solely from the Le Moulin Rouge vineyard, this high-elevation site benefits from its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, showcasing unique gold ridge soils. The 2011 vintage undergoes fermentation with native yeasts and is aged in French oak barrels, typically around 40-50% new. Peter Michael Winery, established in 1982, emphasises a Burgundy-inspired approach to winemaking. Expect notes of red cherry, subtle earthiness and restrained minerality, reflected in its structure and acidity.
Vinous
- The 2011 Pinot Noir Le Moulin Rouge Pisoni Vineyard wafts from the glass with freshly cut flowers, mint and small red berries. Another finely shaped, chiseled wine, the 2011 shows lovely precision and plenty of nuance. Sweet, floral notes add brightness on the saline-infused finish. Today, the new oak is a bit noticeable, so it will be interesting to see how things develop over the next year, and beyond. This is an especially silky, refined wine from a site in the Santa Lucia Highlands that often tends towards a more powerful expression of Pinot.

Inspired by the Médoc and Côte d'Or

Peter Michael Winery was founded by British businessman Sir Peter Michael in the early 1980s with a singular vision - to make wine in the terroir-driven tradition of Burgundy and Bordeaux, under the California sun and in California soil. The winery currently produce around fifteen wines using four varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Consistency and quality are the watchwords here - the wines are clearly inspired by the poise and precision of their Old World counterparts but can't help expressing an edge of Californian excess - ripe fruit abounds on the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir while the Cabernet Sauvignons have a density and concentration that many Bordelais would envy.
