The Peter Michael Clos du Ciel Pinot Noir 2011 is a meticulously produced single-vineyard red wine from the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA in Sonoma County, California. This wine is derived solely from Pinot Noir grapes harvested from the estate-owned Clos du Ciel vineyard, situated at a high elevation near the Pacific coast. The vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate, characterised by strong sunlight and cool ocean breezes. Peter Michael Winery employs traditional Burgundian methods, including hand-sorting and fermentation with native yeasts. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, allowing it to express the vineyard`s terroir without excessive intervention. Established in 1980 by Sir Peter Michael, this winery aims for precision in every aspect of production.

A supple, pretty wine, the 2011 Pinot Noir Clos du Ciel is laced with plum, black cherry, cola, menthol, hard candy and sweet spices. Layers of dark, racy fruit build to the textured, voluptuous finish. The Clos du Ciel is the most open and accessible of the 2011 Pinots, and should be drunk sooner rather than later. This is one of the more overt 2011 Pinots from the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA readers are likely to come across. Clos du Ciel emerges from the warmest of the three estate Pinot vineyards Peter Michael owns. The 2011 was much more impressive from barrel than in bottle.

Inspired by the Médoc and Côte d'Or

Peter Michael Winery was founded by British businessman Sir Peter Michael in the early 1980s with a singular vision - to make wine in the terroir-driven tradition of Burgundy and Bordeaux, under the California sun and in California soil. The winery currently produce around fifteen wines using four varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Consistency and quality are the watchwords here - the wines are clearly inspired by the poise and precision of their Old World counterparts but can't help expressing an edge of Californian excess - ripe fruit abounds on the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir while the Cabernet Sauvignons have a density and concentration that many Bordelais would envy.
