Peter Michael Belle Côte Chardonnay 2002 is a white wine from Sonoma Coast, California, crafted by Peter Michael Winery. The vineyard is situated on clay and volcanic soils, which impart body and mineral structure to this wine. The 2002 vintage benefits from a warm growing season, contributing to a concentrated fruit character. This Chardonnay reveals aromas of white peach, citrus zest and hazelnut. The palate is defined by a layered structure, offering a mineral edge and a lengthy finish.

Bright yellow color with a slight haze. Highly complex nose melds fresh pineapple, grapefruit, lemon and crushed stone, all lifted by a strong citrus rind element. Very dense, rich and bright; uncompromisingly dry but superconcentrated and wonderfully nuanced from the start. Offers a superb range of flavors, including grapefruit, stone, lichee, and a delicate suggestion of rose petal, plus hints of exotic fruits. Finishes with youthful austerity and superb grip. Shows the typical viscosity of this bottling, but seems more backward than the 2001 at a similar stage.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2004

Inspired by the Médoc and Côte d'Or

Peter Michael Winery was founded by British businessman Sir Peter Michael in the early 1980s with a singular vision - to make wine in the terroir-driven tradition of Burgundy and Bordeaux, under the California sun and in California soil. The winery currently produce around fifteen wines using four varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Consistency and quality are the watchwords here - the wines are clearly inspired by the poise and precision of their Old World counterparts but can't help expressing an edge of Californian excess - ripe fruit abounds on the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir while the Cabernet Sauvignons have a density and concentration that many Bordelais would envy.
