Penfolds St Henri 2010 is a Shiraz from South Australia. St Henri is a Shiraz-based blend, with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, matured exclusively in very old, large oak vats, which distinguishes it from other Penfolds wines. This half-bottle presents notes of ripe black cherry, dark chocolate and earth, with nuances of dried herbs and spice. The palate is powerful yet refined, with a firm tannic structure and a sustained finish.

Opaque ruby. Pungent, spice-tinged dark berry liqueur and cherry-vanilla scents unwind slowly while retaining very good focus. Offers palate-staining black and blue fruit flavors complicated by suggestions of mocha and lavender pastilles, with a hint of cracked pepper emerging on the back half. Closes on a smoky note, with mounting tannins and a whiplash of juicy, gently sweet dark berry preserves.Josh Raynolds1st July 2014

Released May 2014. TA 6.7 g/l, pH 3.57. Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills. Quiet, restrained, very firm and understated. Longer lived than Grange, according to Peter Gago. High spicy fragrance. Certainly much more understated than the likes of Bins 389 or 150. The most European of the range. (RH)
