The first 100% shiraz Grange since 1963, and an excellent follow on to the 1998 vintage. Grange is both Penfolds` and arguably Australia`s most famous wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climate of South Australia. In the words of Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker, on the nose, "Blackberry and blueberry fruit interwoven with perfectly tuned, malty, savoury oak, with liquorice and anise notes hovering above. Upon sitting there is a whirling aromatic shift, the wine becoming more complex, deeper, richer and darker." On the palate, "Layers of fruit, with blackberry and blueberry to the fore, as suggested by the nose. An underlying tarriness and new oak are seamlessly absorbed. A mass of fine grained tannins court a firm tight finish of great length."
Amazingly dense and young in colour, this just stretches out in front of you. Dense, dark brambled blackberry and raspberry fruits, concentrated yet with lightness of touch, powerful but finely boned tannins, with waves of tobacco, sage and spice. Comes at you with grip and personality, one to get hold of and sink into. One of only seven Grange vintages with 100% Shiraz.Jane Anson11th October 2023

The 1999 Penfolds Grange is 100% Shiraz and it has a deep garnet-brick color. It jumps from the glass with gregarious notions of Indian spices, cigar box, and iron ore, leading to a core of plum preserves, raisin cake, and clove oil, with a touch of dried herbs. The medium to full-bodied palate explodes with exotic spices and mineral-laced, dried berry flavors, framed by a racy backbone and a chewy texture, finishing long.Lisa Perrotti-Brown9th August 2023
91Vinous
Full ruby-red. Sexy aromas of raspberry, cola, root beer and coconut. Thick, dense and concentrated, with exotic, slightly candied dark fruit, caramel, toasted coconut and mineral flavors nicely shaped by firm acids. Shows strong fruit and a major dose of oak on the powerful, backward finish. This can't quite match the 1998 for sheer depth of fruit, but it's built to age. Stephen Tanzer1st July 2004
Lively, fresh, racy – one of the leaner, more austere, more claret-like examples. Exceptionally dry finish – really tough in fact at the moment. (JR)
