Penfolds Grange 1996 is a full-bodied Shiraz blend from South Australia. Since its first vintage in 1951, Grange has become the most collectible Australian wine on the market. Typically blended with a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grange is renowned for richness, its aromatics and its extraordinary longevity. In operation since 1844 at the Magill Estate near Adelaide, Penfolds is the sine qua non of Australian wine. The winery team is led by the masterly winemaker Peter Gago. While it boasts a vast portfolio wines, Penfolds is exemplified by Grange, arguably the most iconic wine of any New World wine region. "This is so classy and amazing with such composure and finesse. All about fine grain and perfect tone. Sensational from the start. Full body, tight and silky. Will go on forever." James Suckling, 2017

Ruby-red. Complex, high-toned, oak-driven aromas of mocha, flowers, spices, bourbon, peat, licorice, vanilla, cigar tobacco and earth. Juicy and penetrating, with strong mineral, lead pencil, espresso and tobacco flavors. Has a solid backbone and noteworthy grip, but shows no hard edges. Finishes with big, ripe tannins and excellent length.Stephen Tanzer1st July 2001

Sweet, round and well balanced nose. This wine looked much younger than it smelt with its still-purple hue. It was a flattering wine but I thought could do with a little more freshness on the nose. There`s a salty note (something I often find on Shiraz and sometimes on Syrah) and a very dead, over-oaked finish. The coconut flavour of the American oak used was too much for me. (JR)
