The pinnacle of the Penfolds red wine range, Grange is a rich, opulent, full-bodied Shiraz, produced from the best possible grapes sourced from low-yielding, old Shiraz vines. The unique and distinctive Grange style is based on ripe Shiraz fruit and stylish American oak in fine harmony. 1990 was an excellent Australian vintage, made from predominantly Shiraz (95%) and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Ripe plums and smoky vanillin oak on the nose follow through on a complex palate and a beautifully long finish.

Showcases the stately, confident and sure-footed character of Grange, delivering purity, power and depth, palma violets, liquorice, silky tannins, intense and concentrated, with crushed leaf, earth, pencil lead and crème de cassis. Grapes sourced from 85% Barossa, 15% Clare and Coonawarra, 100% new oak, American hogsheads. 3.36ph. John Duval winemaker, and the first vintage that Grange Hermitage simply became Grange.Jane Anson17th September 2025
18 Jancis Robinson
Matured in new American oak hogsheads for 18 months. 95% Shiraz, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon (1993 was 14% Cabernet Sauvignon! The highest ever). Awarded Wine of the Year in 1995 by Wine Spectator. (Gago thinks this wine is going through a little bit of a dip – that could last about 10-11 months… and he prefers the 1991 Grange anyway.) Barossa Valley, Clare Valley and Coonawarra.

Delicate, fine nose… almost lightly floral ... elegant fruits and mint. Robust flavour! Cool peppermint cutting through underlying, rich, concentrated fruits.. Powerful, medium tannins. A more provocative style than previous wines... Excellent intensity. (VD)
