Soldera Pegasos 2005 is a medium- to full-bodied, single-vineyard Sangiovese red wine from the Montalcino sub-region of Tuscany, central Italy. With a career spanning five decades, the late Gianfranco Soldera produced what are regarded as some of the purest and most ethereal expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. Until his death in 2019 at the age of 82, he was a zealous guardian of its unique terroir and the wines it produced. "The 2005 Pegasos is not a new wine, per se, but rather a barrel of 2005 Brunello-designated juice that Soldera thought was ready to bottle and drink sooner rather than later, but not up to the qualitative standards of his top Brunello labels. It is a beautiful, silky wine graced with perfumed dried cherries, flowers and minerals, all of which come together in a delicate, feminine expression of Sangiovese. Ideally the wine is best opened an hour or so in advance to allow for some of the small imperfections in the bouquet to blow off. The 2005 Pegasos has come together quite nicely over the last few months and it will be interesting to see where it goes from here. The 2005 IGT Pegasos is a wine Soldera produced only once and will probably not bottle again now that all of his wines are sold as IGTs. Soldera explains that Pegasos is a cask of Brunello juice that matured faster than the others and that was therefore bottled earlier than is typical here. That would make Pegasos a rough equivalent to the Intistieti Vino da Tavola (not to be confused with the Intistieti Brunello) Soldera made a few times in the 1980s. The 2005 Pegasos remains a somewhat compact, slender wine that has not really grown or changed much since it was first released. Occasional shades of Soldera brilliance come through from time to time, but otherwise this is a pleasant but not especially exciting wine. - Antonio Galloni

Soldera Case Basse
Visionary Brunello with natural purity
The late Gianfranco Soldera was a visionary producer of some the purest and most ethereal expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. A former insurance broker, Soldera purchased his Case Basse estate in 1972. Until his death in 2019 at the age of 82, he was a zealous guardian of its unique terroir and the wines it produced.
With his botanist wife, Graziella, Soldera created Case Basse as an extraordinary ecosystem, including a two-hectare botanical park with more than 1,500 unique rose varieties, and a habitat for insect species that predate on vine parasites – thus allowing Soldera to forgo pesticides in his vineyards.
Beyond terroir, Soldera believed that the most important element for creating truly great wines was time. In practice, this meant slow fermentations (for a month or more), solely of free-run juice only, in large old slavonian oak vats without temperature control, followed by extended maturation in the same vessels – lasting up to six years for the flagship riserva bottlings.
With their trademark structure, hedonistic richness and beguiling aromatics, the wines of Soldera are unmistakeable. To have the opportunity to taste one at the peak of its maturity (such as the exquisite 1990), is a rare pleasure.
