Pax Mahle Lyman Ranch Chenin Blanc 2023 is a single-vineyard wine from Amador County, California. This wine is produced from 100% Chenin Blanc, sourced from Lyman Ranch, which features red granitic soils at an elevation of 1,400 ft. The grapes underwent whole-cluster pressing, followed by full malolactic fermentation. Ambient yeasts and bacteria were used during the fermentation process. The wine matured for 10 months in a combination of neutral French oak and new Stockinger Austrian barrels.

The 2023 Chenin Blanc Lyman Ranch, from a site in Amador County, is superb. Ample and broad, the Lyman Chenin is so expressive. Apricot, dried flowers, tangerine peel and gravel blossom in the glass. This site at 2,000 feet in elevation on red granitic soils yields an incredibly distinctive wine. Impressive.Antonio Galloni1st January 2025

Grown at 1,400 feet of elevation. Whole-cluster pressed into concrete eggs and neutral 500-litre French and Austrian oak barrels where it fermented with ambient yeasts, went through natural malolactic conversion and then aged for 10 months in old French and Austrian oak. Minimal added SO2. Filtered for clarity before bottling. Aromas of pear, pear skin and struck match. Faintly saline flavours of pear, pear skin, lemon zest and pink grapefruit are mouth-watering with juicy acidity that pleasantly puckers the cheeks. Saline quality persists through the finish with grapefruit and pomelo notes. Outstanding.VGV(AY)

Inspired by the Médoc and Côte d'Or

Peter Michael Winery was founded by British businessman Sir Peter Michael in the early 1980s with a singular vision - to make wine in the terroir-driven tradition of Burgundy and Bordeaux, under the California sun and in California soil. The winery currently produce around fifteen wines using four varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Consistency and quality are the watchwords here - the wines are clearly inspired by the poise and precision of their Old World counterparts but can't help expressing an edge of Californian excess - ripe fruit abounds on the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir while the Cabernet Sauvignons have a density and concentration that many Bordelais would envy.
