Château Pavie is one of the leading producers of Saint-Émilion and the 1998 is a superb release that has blossomed with additional time in the bottle. Rich, decadent and mouthfilling, it offers up wonderful notes of black fruits, forest floor, cigar box and cedar. Though in a perfect window for drinking, this should continue to develop over the next decade or so.

Medium to deep garnet-brick in color, the 1998 Pavie prances out of the glass with showy notes of black cherry preserves, stewed plums, and kirsch leading to suggestions of sandalwood, menthol, crushed rocks, and iron ore with a waft of potpourri. The medium to full-bodied palate is bright and impactful, delivering shimmery yet rich black fruits and loads of exotic spice sparks, supported by amazing tension and satiny tannins, finishing on an epically long-lasting anise note. This is stunning! It still has 15-20+ years.Lisa Perrotti-Brown13th December 2023

The 1998 Pavie was Gerard Perse’s second vintage after buying the property and it was actually matured in 200% new oak. Now at two decades, it continues to be attired with a fresh and very attractive bouquet, blackberry, mulberry, clove and bay leaf, just a touch of Italian delicatessen in the background. I like the definition here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation and a keen thread of acidity, quite classic in style with tobacco and a light seaweed influence towards the persistent finish. This is ageing supremely well and you can another 10 to 15 years of drinking pleasure here. Excellent. Tasted at the château. Neal Martin1st May 2018

A Decadent St-Emilion

Situated to the south-east of the town of St-Emilion, Pavis is the largest 1er Grand Cru Classé property in the commune with over 35 hectares of vines. The vineyards themselves are ideally situated on the south facing slopes of a limestone plateau for excellent exposure, ensuring optimal ripeness in the right conditions. Since the late 1990s, the Grand Vin has been a blend of 55% Merlot, 25% Cabernet France and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented in wooden vats and aged in 100% new oak for 18 months. The wines are bottled unfiltered for added concentration and texture.

Pavie was purchased in 1998 by Gérard Perse who has, assisted by consultant oenologist Michel Rolland, pushed the wines towards a bolder, more concentrated style with a focus on concentrated fruit on the palate and an expressive nose.
