93 Jane Anson
Great moment to drink this, with the structure fully softened, tannins integrated and the fruit gentle, edged by walnut, tobacco, cigar box, smoked cedar and grilled dried herbs. Bernard Magrez had owned Pape Clement for 10 years at this point, having arrived (through marriage) in 1985, and he was already making an impact in terms of its taste profile, building up concentration, but this remains a classically balanced Pessac Léognan, traditional in feel. Michel Rolland consultant. 47hl/h yield. Tasted in the same week as this vertical, but at my house, with food.Jane Anson9th November 2021

The 1995 Pape-Clément is also served from magnum. Deep, almost opaque in colour, it has a youthful bouquet, slightly reductive at first, pastille-like with blueberry and cassis surfacing with time. The palate is marked by chewy tannins, grippy and heady in style, certainly powerful with tobacco and black pepper infused dark berry fruit. I find this a little heavy-going to be frank, typical of the wines at the time, though I would be interested to revisit it in a few years’ time.Neal Martin3rd June 2022

Deep ruby/purple, with a tight but promising nose of herb-tinged black currants, graphite, vanilla, and smoke, this medium-bodied wine is elegant, with very pure, concentrated fruit, moderate extract, and a long finish. The wine is reaching its adolescence and is certainly accessible, although far from full maturity. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2016. Last tasted, 4/02.Robert Parker1st January 2003
