Palmer Alter Ego 2016 is a vibrant expression of this famed Margaux estate. The 2016 bottling is a harmonious blend of 54% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, the latter adding significant aromatic and textural complexity. Grown on the estate`s gravel-rich plateau, the wine offers a lush and fragrant profile of blackberries, dark chocolate and menthol. Since 2014, the vineyards have been farmed biodynamically, contributing to the wine`s remarkable energy and mineral precision. It is a velvety and refined red, balancing its generous mid-palate with a long, satisfying finish that echoes the elegance and refinement of the 2016 vintage.

The 2016 Alter Ego de Palmer has a perfumed bouquet of juicy black fruit, boysenberry jam and light violet aromas. The palate is sweet and chewy on the entry, and quite compact, with firm tannins, leading to a lightly spiced finish. It just misses some excitement and pizzazz compared to its peers. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. Neal Martin1st August 2020

48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 12% Petit Verdot.Very bright dark glossy crimson. Very rich and sweet and approachable. Round and fresh. Meaty. Very, very sweet start and then chewy. Lots going on here but not that much tannin, much less than in most other 2016s. Very juicy. (JR)

Classic, Concentrated Margaux

Château Palmer is a 3ème Cru Classé property and is one of the most celebrated estates in the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, renowned for producing rich and opulent wines with exceptional longevity. The 55 hectare estate is characterised by its mixture of fine and sandy gravels, together with clay soils. The key grape varieties are old vine Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, all farmed biodynamically, resulting in superbly elegant, velvety wines with a wonderful capacity to age and evolve in bottle.

In addition to the first wine, Château Palmer, the estate produces a second red from specific plots, Alter Ego de Palmer. Created to be as equally terroir-driven and expressive as the Grand Vin, the Alter Ego is supple, rounded and more approachable in youth.
