The 2006 Alter Ego de Palmer is a blend composed of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. It is a delightful, mature Bordeaux that is currently in its prime. The nose reveals tertiary nuances of leather and forest floor, accompanied by tannins that are seamlessly integrated. The palate presents mature black fruit notes, intermingled with leather, leading to a medium-length finish.

Guaranteed to make people happy around a festive table, Alter Ego de Palmer is easily in the top three most consistent 2nd wines of Bordeaux (redefining the term along the way), and it is singing right now in the 2006 vintage. Often overshadowed by the 2005, this has depth and concentration at 16 years old, and majors on black chocolate, espresso and liqourice root, with the waves of peony and iris that are so signature to both the 1st and 2nd wine at Palmer. 50% new oak, Thomas Duroux director.Jane Anson30th November 2022

Tasted blind at Farr Vintners' horizontal tasting, the 2006 Alter Ego de Palmer has evolved a savoury bouquet with earthy, almost Saint Estèphe like aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red cherry fruit, quite spicy yet harmonious with a ferrous, structured, tobacco-stained finish that lingers long in the mouth. After ten years, this seems to be à point, though it has the substance to give another 5-8 years of pleasure. Tasted April 2016.Neal Martin30th May 2016

(53% cabernet sauvignon, 41% merlot and 6% petit verdot) Bright ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of plum, mulberry, chocolate and animal fur. Sweet and reasonably deep, with good definition and energy. Finishes with fairly serious but nicely buffered tannins and very good length. This still needs some time to come together.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2007

Chateau Palmer

Classic, Concentrated Margaux

Château Palmer is a 3ème Cru Classé property and is one of the most celebrated estates in the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, renowned for producing rich and opulent wines with exceptional longevity. The 55 hectare estate is characterised by its mixture of fine and sandy gravels, together with clay soils. The key grape varieties are old vine Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, all farmed biodynamically, resulting in superbly elegant, velvety wines with a wonderful capacity to age and evolve in bottle.

In addition to the first wine, Château Palmer, the estate produces a second red from specific plots, Alter Ego de Palmer. Created to be as equally terroir-driven and expressive as the Grand Vin, the Alter Ego is supple, rounded and more approachable in youth.
