From the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, Palmer Alter Ego 2005 is crafted by Château Palmer, a winery founded in 1748, known for its innovative approach to viticulture. This vintage, with an alcohol content of 14%, reflects the exceptional growing conditions of a dry season that favoured ripening. Featuring a blend dominated by Merlot, the wine is designed as an alternative expression of Palmer’s terroir, marked by a deeper fruit profile. Tasting notes reveal subtle hints of Black Raspberry, Violets, and Dark Chocolate, framed by an underlying structural integrity typical of the vintage. Aged in 25% new French oak, it exhibits a vibrant fruit purity complemented by a silky finish.

Bright, deep ruby-red. Sweet, enticing aromas of redcurrant, plum, coffee and meat. This offers lovely sweetness in the mouth, with a terrific core of fruit and a captivating sugar/acid balance. Unusually dense for this second wine. Finishes long and firmly tannic, with plenty of lingering flavor. The best yet for this label.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2006

Tasted blind. Interesting hint of putty on the nose. Strong Cabernet/cassis fruit aromas. Not the most subtle, but correct. I could mistake it for a top Chilean, I suspect! (JR)

Classic, Concentrated Margaux

Château Palmer is a 3ème Cru Classé property and is one of the most celebrated estates in the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, renowned for producing rich and opulent wines with exceptional longevity. The 55 hectare estate is characterised by its mixture of fine and sandy gravels, together with clay soils. The key grape varieties are old vine Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, all farmed biodynamically, resulting in superbly elegant, velvety wines with a wonderful capacity to age and evolve in bottle.

In addition to the first wine, Château Palmer, the estate produces a second red from specific plots, Alter Ego de Palmer. Created to be as equally terroir-driven and expressive as the Grand Vin, the Alter Ego is supple, rounded and more approachable in youth.
