First released in 1998, Alter Ego de Palmer is the second wine of Margaux Third Growth, Château Palmer. It was created to be as equally terroir-driven and expressive as the grand vin, but would be supple, rounded and more approachable in youth. The 2017 is a blend of 53% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot.

The first thing that strikes here is the purity of expression of the blueberry and raspberry fruit, set against cocoa bean, liqourice and a gentle twist of orange peel and saffran. In theory, looking at vintage alone, this shouldn’t be as good as the 2016 2nd wines that we are tasting it alongside, but it stands out for its excellence - a reflection of the quality of Alter Ego. Second wine created in 1998, predominantly on terraces 3 and 4, Mahler-Besse & Maison Sichel negociants owners, Thomas Duroux technical director since 2004.Jane Anson1st November 2023

The 2017 Alter Ego is pliant, textured and supple. Expressive floral notes add inner perfume and freshness to a core of dark red berry fruit, mocha, new leather, spice and menthol. A wine of striking textural richness, Alter Ago also remains light on its feet and wonderfully nuanced. The 13% alcohol, low by present-day standards, adds to a feeling of freshness. Composed of 53% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Alter Ego de Palmer is deep garnet-purple in color and springs from the glass with vivacious black raspberries, black cherries and crushed blackcurrants notes plus hints of Sichuan pepper, menthol, pencil lead and cardamom. Medium-bodied, the palate is charged with energy, featuring expressive, bright black fruits and firm, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and lively.Lisa Perrotti-Brown16th March 2020

Classic, Concentrated Margaux

Château Palmer is a 3ème Cru Classé property and is one of the most celebrated estates in the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, renowned for producing rich and opulent wines with exceptional longevity. The 55 hectare estate is characterised by its mixture of fine and sandy gravels, together with clay soils. The key grape varieties are old vine Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, all farmed biodynamically, resulting in superbly elegant, velvety wines with a wonderful capacity to age and evolve in bottle.

In addition to the first wine, Château Palmer, the estate produces a second red from specific plots, Alter Ego de Palmer. Created to be as equally terroir-driven and expressive as the Grand Vin, the Alter Ego is supple, rounded and more approachable in youth.
