Palmer 1982 is a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine from the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux. Château Palmer is a Third Growth estate located within the Margaux appellation, with a history stretching back to the 17th century. Today the estate covers approximately 52 hectares and is managed by Thomas Duroux. The 1982 vintage in Bordeaux was one of the finest of the 20th century, marked by exceptional weather conditions, including a hot and dry growing season, which led to optimal ripening of the grapes. The `82 grand vin is available here in double-magnum format. "Incredible aromatics, floral and expressive, jumping out the glass and one of the most inviting on the nose in terms of scents with sour cherries, sweet tobacco, cedar and mint. Juicy, alive and vibrant on the palate, this has energy and focus straight away. Lively but well controlled, still offering lots of opulent polish but in a serene, charming way. This has tension and grip as well as bounce and a subtle chew to the tannins. A lingering headiness sustains the finish with moreish accents of salt, graphite and flint - this is seductive and nowhere near tired." Decanter, 2023
The 1982 Palmer is a vintage that I have rarely encountered since it has always been overshadowed by the 1983, even deemed a failure in some quarters. Now at four decades, it does have a slightly musty, earthy nose that fails to deliver a fraction of the fruit displayed by the 1983. Maybe a touch of corkiness here? The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins that frame the decayed red fruit, quite Right Bank in style with a lovely touch of spice. It coheres towards the finish with black pepper and tobacco notes. Fully mature, I feel that this is a decent 1982, maybe just let down by the nose.
