The 1997 Palmer came from two bottles, the first corked. It was the first vintage where they stopped using Cabernet Franc in the blend when it was replaced with Petit Verdot. The second is perfectly sound on the nose, perhaps with a little more fruit intensity than the 2004, with blackberry, crushed violet, iris and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with a decent body, though it dips in the middle. An odd dark chocolate element to this wine (possibly from the oak) just muddles the finish. Drinking perfectly now. Tasted at 67 Pall Mall. Neal Martin1st August 2023

Chateau Palmer

Classic, Concentrated Margaux

Château Palmer is a 3ème Cru Classé property and is one of the most celebrated estates in the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, renowned for producing rich and opulent wines with exceptional longevity. The 55 hectare estate is characterised by its mixture of fine and sandy gravels, together with clay soils. The key grape varieties are old vine Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, all farmed biodynamically, resulting in superbly elegant, velvety wines with a wonderful capacity to age and evolve in bottle.

In addition to the first wine, Château Palmer, the estate produces a second red from specific plots, Alter Ego de Palmer. Created to be as equally terroir-driven and expressive as the Grand Vin, the Alter Ego is supple, rounded and more approachable in youth.
