The 1985 Palmer replicates the bottle poured at the vertical a couple of years earlier. It has a very fragrant, quintessentially Margaux-like bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry, cedar and rosemary sporting fine delineation and vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. There is a brightness to this Palmer that I really appreciate, making this a less concentrated yet more transparent wine with elegance from start to finish. That tincture of Earl Grey just pops its head around the corner to say "Hello" after 30 minutes. Wonderful. Tasted at the 1985 dinner at Noble Rot Mayfair. Neal Martin17th June 2025

Classic, Concentrated Margaux

Château Palmer is a 3ème Cru Classé property and is one of the most celebrated estates in the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, renowned for producing rich and opulent wines with exceptional longevity. The 55 hectare estate is characterised by its mixture of fine and sandy gravels, together with clay soils. The key grape varieties are old vine Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, all farmed biodynamically, resulting in superbly elegant, velvety wines with a wonderful capacity to age and evolve in bottle.

In addition to the first wine, Château Palmer, the estate produces a second red from specific plots, Alter Ego de Palmer. Created to be as equally terroir-driven and expressive as the Grand Vin, the Alter Ego is supple, rounded and more approachable in youth.
