A powerful, long and complex vintage, the 1983 is often considered the best Château Palmer of the 1980s. A blend of 41% Merlot, 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. A highly concentrated red with opulent fruit balanced by a wonderful freshness. Best enjoyed now.

When the 1983 Palmer flies high, it touches the stars. This is another bottle proving that at 40 years old it is better now than ever before. It is completely resplendent on the nose that blossoms in the glass with that heady concoction of red and black fruit, freshly-rolled tobacco, violet petals and an underlying mineralité. Stunning delineation and depth. The palate is medium-bodied, never a powerhouse Palmer, which means that it’s cut from a different cloth to recent vintages. It is more harmonious than London’s Gospel Choir in full song, the finish perfectly pitched and delineated. It just carries itself with effortless ease. Magnificent. Tasted blind at Pichon-Comtesse de Lalande. Neal Martin1st August 2023

Chateau Palmer

Classic, Concentrated Margaux

Château Palmer is a 3ème Cru Classé property and is one of the most celebrated estates in the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, renowned for producing rich and opulent wines with exceptional longevity. The 55 hectare estate is characterised by its mixture of fine and sandy gravels, together with clay soils. The key grape varieties are old vine Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, all farmed biodynamically, resulting in superbly elegant, velvety wines with a wonderful capacity to age and evolve in bottle.

In addition to the first wine, Château Palmer, the estate produces a second red from specific plots, Alter Ego de Palmer. Created to be as equally terroir-driven and expressive as the Grand Vin, the Alter Ego is supple, rounded and more approachable in youth.
