Château Palmer is a Third Growth estate located within the Margaux appellation, with a history stretching back to the 17th century. Today the estate covers approximately 52 hectares and is managed by Thomas Duroux. The 1982 vintage in Bordeaux was marked by exceptional weather conditions, including a hot and dry growing season, which led to optimal ripening of the grapes.

The 1982 Palmer is a vintage that I have rarely encountered since it has always been overshadowed by the 1983, even deemed a failure in some quarters. Now at four decades, it does have a slightly musty, earthy nose that fails to deliver a fraction of the fruit displayed by the 1983. Maybe a touch of corkiness here? The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins that frame the decayed red fruit, quite Right Bank in style with a lovely touch of spice. It coheres towards the finish with black pepper and tobacco notes. Fully mature, I feel that this is a decent 1982, maybe just let down by the nose. Tasted at the Palmer vertical at the château.

Classic, Concentrated Margaux

Château Palmer is a 3ème Cru Classé property and is one of the most celebrated estates in the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, renowned for producing rich and opulent wines with exceptional longevity. The 55 hectare estate is characterised by its mixture of fine and sandy gravels, together with clay soils. The key grape varieties are old vine Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, all farmed biodynamically, resulting in superbly elegant, velvety wines with a wonderful capacity to age and evolve in bottle.

In addition to the first wine, Château Palmer, the estate produces a second red from specific plots, Alter Ego de Palmer. Created to be as equally terroir-driven and expressive as the Grand Vin, the Alter Ego is supple, rounded and more approachable in youth.
