The 1971 Palmer remains one of the best wines of the vintage. There's plenty of degraded red fruit on the nose, with freshly tilled loam, light allspice and cedar notes, and wilted rose petals emerging from time. Wonderful definition. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, perhaps now just a little more mature and drier on the finish than bottles I encountered a decade ago, yet with more sustain than the 1967 tasted alongside light white pepper notes lingering on the aftertaste. Tasted at the Palmer vertical at the château.Neal Martin1st August 2023

Classic, Concentrated Margaux

Château Palmer is a 3ème Cru Classé property and is one of the most celebrated estates in the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, renowned for producing rich and opulent wines with exceptional longevity. The 55 hectare estate is characterised by its mixture of fine and sandy gravels, together with clay soils. The key grape varieties are old vine Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, all farmed biodynamically, resulting in superbly elegant, velvety wines with a wonderful capacity to age and evolve in bottle.

In addition to the first wine, Château Palmer, the estate produces a second red from specific plots, Alter Ego de Palmer. Created to be as equally terroir-driven and expressive as the Grand Vin, the Alter Ego is supple, rounded and more approachable in youth.
