The 1979 vintage marked the first release of Opus One, a joint venture between pioneering Californian winemaker Robert Mondavi and the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild. This, the 1991 vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 93%, Cabernet Franc 6% and 1% Merlot, aged for 15 months in new French oak. The vintage yielded wines of great structure and balance with a sweet middle palate, layering fruit and oak aromas. Sold in glorious large format.

Dark red with an amber rim. Wild, musky, fully resolved aromas and flavors of plum, currant, spices and leather, plus a suggestion of stewed tomato. Then surprisingly alive, even a bit high-pitched, on the palate, showing slightly tart acidity and good energy but only moderate nuance and pliancy. (A second bottle of this wine was a bit more truffley and less lively.) (13.4% alcohol; this was the first vintage made in today's Opus One winery)Stephen Tanzer1st July 2018

A First Growth in Napa

Known as NapaMedoc for the first three vintages and rebranded in 1982 as Opus One, this iconic Californian winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The objective was to recreate a First Growth level, Bordeaux style wine in the Napa Valley and by every measure, they succeeded. The Grand Vin is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot and is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak before being laid down for a further 18 months to mature in bottle. Since 1993, they have produced a second wine, Overture.

The winemaker is Micheal Silacci who apprenticed under legendary Napa winemakers Andre Tchelistcheff and Warren Winiarski and previously held positions at Beaulieu Vineyard and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.
