Opus One 2012 is a Bordeaux-style blend from Napa Valley, crafted by the collaboration of Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The 2012 vintage is characterised by its ripe fruit and balanced acidity. This wine is predominantly composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Petite Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. It presents a deep garnet colour with aromas of blackcurrant, cherry and subtle herbal notes. The palate is structured, showing layers of dark fruit alongside hints of oak and spice. Available here in half-bottle format.

Clearly more concentrated than the 2011, showcasing espresso, liquorice, bitter black chocolate, mint leaf, blackcurrant, cassis, blood orange, velvety tannins. This captures the exuberance of Napa tempered by the restraint of Opus and will power for decades. Great balance, great stuff, hard not to fall in love with. 100% new oak for ageing, Michael Silacci director, harvest September 21 to October 20, 18 days skin contact.Jane Anson26th June 2025

The 2012 Opus One is a terrific choice for drinking now. Silky and beautifully perfumed, the 2012 is wonderfully open-knit in this tasting. The purity of the fruit is alluring, There's still a good bit of freshness, too. Naturally, the 2012 reflects the medium-bodied style that is typical of the year, but all the elements are very nicely balanced. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, rose petal, spice and blood orange linger. Antonio Galloni9th May 2024

Deep, glowing crimson. Complex, pretty perfume with some purple fruit (cassis more than anything else), a hint of game but overlaying it all great sweetness without too much alcohol (though a little heat on the finish). Very concentrated and flattering. Lots of ripe tannin tucked away on the finish. Much sweeter than a bordeaux would be but not sickly. Hint of something powdery/smoky on the finish. (JR)

A First Growth in Napa

Known as NapaMedoc for the first three vintages and rebranded in 1982 as Opus One, this iconic Californian winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The objective was to recreate a First Growth level, Bordeaux style wine in the Napa Valley and by every measure, they succeeded. The Grand Vin is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot and is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak before being laid down for a further 18 months to mature in bottle. Since 1993, they have produced a second wine, Overture.

The winemaker is Micheal Silacci who apprenticed under legendary Napa winemakers Andre Tchelistcheff and Warren Winiarski and previously held positions at Beaulieu Vineyard and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.
