At the 20 year point, and this is classic Opus, stately, reserved, balanced, richly aromatic, layered with incense and sandalwood that appear in waves through the palate and is just so damn good. Captures the generosity of Napa, the gentle spices of a warm season, and yet there are slate tannins that tug and slow things down. This one reminds me of the sibling relationship with Mouton, more than any other in this lineup - it delivers a kick of generosity and opulence without ever going too far. Love it. Michael Silacci sole winemaker at this point. Tasting even better than in 2019. Think my favourite of the decade, certainly for drinking now. 100% new French oak for ageing, 20 days skin contact.Jane Anson26th June 2025

Deep, saturated ruby-red. Explosive nose combines currant, plum, dried cranberry and minerals, plus some suggestions of very ripe fruit. Plush, dry and classic; more minerally than fruity in the mouth, with complicating notes of herbs, tobacco leaf and dark chocolate. Not a particularly fleshy style; in fact, this very youthful wine is still a bit unyielding. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and terrific subtle energy, a hint of orange peel adding lift.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2016

A First Growth in Napa

Known as NapaMedoc for the first three vintages and rebranded in 1982 as Opus One, this iconic Californian winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The objective was to recreate a First Growth level, Bordeaux style wine in the Napa Valley and by every measure, they succeeded. The Grand Vin is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot and is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak before being laid down for a further 18 months to mature in bottle. Since 1993, they have produced a second wine, Overture.

The winemaker is Micheal Silacci who apprenticed under legendary Napa winemakers Andre Tchelistcheff and Warren Winiarski and previously held positions at Beaulieu Vineyard and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.
