The 1979 vintage marked the first release of Opus One, a joint venture between pioneering Californian winemaker Robert Mondavi and the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The 1994 vintage is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot and 1% Malbec, aged for 18 months in new French oak. Showing a profound depth of colour, the 1994 Opus One has a rich, full body with supple, velvety tannins and intense aromas of liquorice and spice. Sold in glorious large format.

What a pleasure it is to taste and drink the 1994 Opus One. Far better than a bottle I had last year, this bottle is absolutely terrific.  Voluptuous, sexy and layered to the core, the 1994 races across the palate with superb depth and pure class. 96Antonio Galloni1st October 2014

Medium to deep brick in color, the 1994 Opus One gallops out with up-front scents of dried blackcurrants and boysenberry preserves leading to suggestions of leather sofa, damp soil, black truffle, and cigar box. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with rich black fruit preserves flavors and earthy accents, supported by chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing on a compelling black truffle note.Lisa Perrotti-Brown12th June 2024

A First Growth in Napa

Known as NapaMedoc for the first three vintages and rebranded in 1982 as Opus One, this iconic Californian winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The objective was to recreate a First Growth level, Bordeaux style wine in the Napa Valley and by every measure, they succeeded. The Grand Vin is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot and is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak before being laid down for a further 18 months to mature in bottle. Since 1993, they have produced a second wine, Overture.

The winemaker is Micheal Silacci who apprenticed under legendary Napa winemakers Andre Tchelistcheff and Warren Winiarski and previously held positions at Beaulieu Vineyard and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.
