The 1979 vintage marked the first release of Opus One, a joint venture between pioneering Californian winemaker Robert Mondavi and the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Ever since, the winery has sealed for itself an incredible reputation for producing some of the highest quality Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines in Napa. From the superb 2014 vintage, this offers up delicious notes of warm blackcurrants, red cherry, dried herbs and spring flowers. It is fine-grained, silken textured and remarkably long.

The 2014 Opus One has arrived at its tenth birthday in style. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit, blood orange, mint and white pepper give the 2014 a striking top register of aromatics to play off its mid-weight structure. The 2014 remains quite youthful and vibrant. Its construction and overall feel are decidedly on the more linear, mid-weight side of things, in keeping with the style of the year.Antonio Galloni1st January 2025

The texture of the tannins sits somewhere between slate and velvet, filled out by creamy blackberry fruit, laced with cappuccino, intense espresso, liquorice, rosemary, crushed rocks and black pepper. In a sweet spot where you can begin to drink at full maturity, although once again worth a reminder that these wines are way too often drunk too young, and you should be totally confident in putting it away for another five years at least. A First Growth in Napa

Known as NapaMedoc for the first three vintages and rebranded in 1982 as Opus One, this iconic Californian winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The objective was to recreate a First Growth level, Bordeaux style wine in the Napa Valley and by every measure, they succeeded. The Grand Vin is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot and is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak before being laid down for a further 18 months to mature in bottle. Since 1993, they have produced a second wine, Overture.

The winemaker is Micheal Silacci who apprenticed under legendary Napa winemakers Andre Tchelistcheff and Warren Winiarski and previously held positions at Beaulieu Vineyard and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.
