The Opus One 2010 is a meticulously crafted red blend from the renowned partnership of Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, established with the aim of producing a Bordeaux-style wine in California. This vintage comprises 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. Aromas of ripe blackcurrant, subtle oak and hints of spice emerge from the glass. The wine exhibits a full-bodied structure with velvety tannins and a seamless finish. It promises an ageing potential that extends well into the next decade.
97 Vinous
Bright dark ruby. Initially reticent nose opened in the glass to reveal wonderfully complex scents of black- and redcurrant, blackberry, minerals, licorice, loam and tobacco leaf, plus a whiff of leather. Seamless, savory and classy on entry if a bit subdued, then delivers lovely restrained sweetness and a complicating wildness in the middle palate that still calls for more bottle aging. Old World in its classic dryness, this highly concentrated Opus One really shines on its vibrant, slowly building back end, where the broad, dusty tannins caress and saturate the palate and allow the fruits and minerals to build. A wine of outstanding depth, clarity, finesse of grain and class; it's hard to imagine that this site could give more. Long-time winemaking director Michael Silacci noted that the estate did not strip leaves prior to the brutal August heat spike.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2020
96 Jane Anson
Primary and muscular, with tannins that are on the austere side. This is a wonderfully fragrant, robust and concentrated interpretation of Cabernet Sauvignon, garrigue, dried herbs, espresso, less generous than some but maintains juice and balance, blackcurrant, rose buds, textural with a crayon and slate feel. 19 days skin contact, 100% new oak for ageing, harvest lasted exactly one month from September 23 to October 23 after a year with a cool start followed by an intense heat wave. A First Growth in Napa

Known as NapaMedoc for the first three vintages and rebranded in 1982 as Opus One, this iconic Californian winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The objective was to recreate a First Growth level, Bordeaux style wine in the Napa Valley and by every measure, they succeeded. The Grand Vin is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot and is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak before being laid down for a further 18 months to mature in bottle. Since 1993, they have produced a second wine, Overture.

The winemaker is Micheal Silacci who apprenticed under legendary Napa winemakers Andre Tchelistcheff and Warren Winiarski and previously held positions at Beaulieu Vineyard and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.
