Opus One 2005 is a Napa Bordeaux blend made by one of the true icons of Californian winemaking. Known as NapaMedoc for the first three vintages and rebranded in 1982 as Opus One, this iconic Californian winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The objective was to recreate a First Growth level, Bordeaux style wine in the Napa Valley and by every measure, they succeeded. Historically the Grand Vin has been a blend of around 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak before being laid down for a further 18 months to mature in bottle. The 2005 Opus One is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. "at 15 years old we can just start to see some early bottle ageing notes as it relaxes into itself, with dried rose aromatics and gorgeously tight, bright olives, rosemary, grilled cedar and black pepper. Opens up beautifully in the glass, this has excellent persistency and is a clear success." Decanter, 2019

At the 20 year point, and this is classic Opus, stately, reserved, balanced, richly aromatic, layered with incense and sandalwood that appear in waves through the palate and is just so damn good. Captures the generosity of Napa, the gentle spices of a warm season, and yet there are slate tannins that tug and slow things down. This one reminds me of the sibling relationship with Mouton, more than any other in this lineup - it delivers a kick of generosity and opulence without ever going too far. Love it. Michael Silacci sole winemaker at this point. Tasting even better than in 2019. Think my favourite of the decade, certainly for drinking now. 100% new French oak for ageing, 20 days skin contact.Jane Anson26th June 2025

Deep, saturated ruby-red. Explosive nose combines currant, plum, dried cranberry and minerals, plus some suggestions of very ripe fruit. Plush, dry and classic; more minerally than fruity in the mouth, with complicating notes of herbs, tobacco leaf and dark chocolate. Not a particularly fleshy style; in fact, this very youthful wine is still a bit unyielding. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and terrific subtle energy, a hint of orange peel adding lift.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2016
