‘Opus One’ is a collaborative effort between two legendary wine families, Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux and Robert Mondavi, a prominent figure in the California wine industry. The wines are crafted using carefully selected Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec grapes grown in their estate vineyards. Opus One 1995 is considered a classic vintage for the winery. The growing season in Napa Valley was marked by warm temperatures and consistent ripening, resulting in wines with excellent concentration, depth, and structure.
89 Vinous
Deep browning red. Sauvage aromas of plum jam, game and leather, with complicating notes of roasted fruits and herbs. Smooth on entry, then betrays a slight acid streak in the middle palate, displaying more earth, leather and game than fruit at this point. A distinctly old-style wine with an obvious element of brettanomyces. A vintage with a lot of bottle variation, according to winemaker Michael Silacci, who took over winemaking duties here in 2004.Stephen Tanzer1st June 2016

Sorry, but after the European wines above, admittedly older, but only by five or six years in some cases, this seems relatively dull. Not much evolution. Better mannered than a fruit bomb but a bit fossilised. Sweet and sour. (JR)Jancis Robinson12th December 2011

A First Growth in Napa

Known as NapaMedoc for the first three vintages and rebranded in 1982 as Opus One, this iconic Californian winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The objective was to recreate a First Growth level, Bordeaux style wine in the Napa Valley and by every measure, they succeeded. The Grand Vin is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot and is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak before being laid down for a further 18 months to mature in bottle. Since 1993, they have produced a second wine, Overture.

The winemaker is Micheal Silacci who apprenticed under legendary Napa winemakers Andre Tchelistcheff and Warren Winiarski and previously held positions at Beaulieu Vineyard and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.
