Created for Pulteney Distillery’s 200th anniversary, this 50 Year Old is the oldest whisky Old Pulteney has ever released. The expression brings together just four hogsheads, each matured for five decades and selected by Master of Whisky Creation Sarah Burgess. Only 200 bottles have been produced worldwide – one for each year since the distillery was founded in Wick in 1826. The whisky was matured predominantly in American oak, with a smaller influence of European oak used to add richness and depth without overwhelming the long-aged spirit. After 50 years in cask, it is bottled at 40.8% ABV. The nose opens with chocolate and sweet dried fruit, followed by spiced cedar, vanilla and floral notes. Candied orange peel and citrus oil lead the palate, alongside mature oak and a rich chocolate texture. The finish is long, moving towards tropical fruit with the maritime character associated with Old Pulteney still present after five decades of maturation. The 50 Year Old is presented in a crystal decanter incorporating several references to the distillery. Its neck takes its shape from Pulteney’s distinctive flat-topped still, while an etched wave pattern at the base references its coastal location in Wick. Rose-gold detailing and a case inspired by weathered driftwood complete the presentation.

Old Pulteney

One of Scotland's Most Northerly Distilleries

Old Pulteney has been producing Highland single malt in Wick, in the far north of Scotland, since 1826. The whisky and the distillery are both named in homage to Scottish landowner and politician Sir William Pulteney, after whom the town of Pulteney was named.

Until the establishment of Wolfburn Distillery near Thurso, Old Pulteney was the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland. Its hard-to-access location in the early days of its operation dictated that barley had to be delivered by sea and the whisky left the distillery the same way.

High levels of reflux in the distillery’s odd-shaped stills is a contributing factor to Old Pulteney’s distinctive character, which is somewhat oily yet also ozone-fresh, with a salty tang associated with the distillery’s close proximity to the North Sea.

The core Old Pulteney single malt is a 12-year-old expression. In addition, the distillery produces 17-year-old and 21-year-old expressions which are of particular appeal to ‘maritime malt’ enthusiasts. In addition, In recent years a number of independent bottlings have emerged, notably Gordon & Macphail’s Private Collection 38-year-old, distilled in 1982, and the 1998 Connoisseurs Choice Pulteney.
