Produced by Marco Casolanetti, Oasi degli Angeli Kurni Magnum 2005 hails from the Marche region of Italy. This red wine is made entirely from Montepulciano grapes, cultivated in vineyards with exceptionally high vine densities of up to 15,000 plants per hectare and very low yields. The wine reaches 14.5% alcohol and undergoes a unique ageing process in 200% new oak, ensuring substantial extraction of flavours. This magnum offers a concentrated profile featuring blackberry jam, espresso, and exotic spices, characterised by a heavy mouthfeel and firm tannins. Kurni is recognised for its density, reflecting the distinctive Kupra marittima terroir, with a lasting balsamic-inflected finish.

Vinous
(100% montepulciano) Deep, almost impenetrable ruby-black. Exotically perfumed and decadently rich nose redolent of ripe plum, sweet espresso, chocolate-covered blueberry, moss and allspice. Mouthcoatingly sweet and rich, this offers huge volume and extract, with a fleshy mouth feel to the ripe blackberry, prune, milk chocolate and sandalwood flavors. Harmonious acids give this outsized wine a vibrant, lively feel and extend the creamy-smooth finish for what seems like minutes. I am not usually a fan of these over-the-top reds with little sense of place, but I'll admit that this is a remarkable and very enjoyable wine.Ian d'Agata1st July 2009
