Nyetimber Blanc de Blancs 2017 is a vintage English sparkling wine crafted exclusively from Chardonnay grapes. The wine displays a precise structure with a dosage of 10 g/litre. Nyetimber, based in West Sussex, is renowned for pioneering high-quality English sparkling wines since 1988. The vineyard benefits from a cool climate, ideal for cultivating grapes that retain acidity, contributing to the wine`s crisp finish and complexity.

Nyetimber`s 2017 Blanc de Blancs focuses on the estate`s chalk sites in Hampshire and Sussex (with Kent soon joining) rather than the home vineyards on greensand. In the 2017 vintage—another, after 2016, heavily marked by frost—the Chardonnay here displays quite a surprising aromatic ripeness with sweet-toned apricot, yellow apple and lime met with gentle cashew-butter richness of lees aging and a little baked-custard creaminess, too. As ever at Nyetimber, the texture is smooth, glossy and cushioned. The dosage of 10 grams per liter is tuned for friendliness, ensuring the English acidity doesn`t shout too loudly.

Full bottle 1,616 g. 100% Chardonnay. Disgorged 26 November 2024. Dosage 10 g/l.

Definite smoky/toasty aroma as well as sweet citrus, strong notes of brioche and creamy lees plus pure, bright citrus fruit with just a touch of clementine. Lightly chewy and generous autolytic (toasty) flavours as well as a light `golden spiciness` that is as much texture as flavour. Rich, mouth-filling. More intensity than elegance at the moment but the finish is long and the mousse lingers nicely alongside those layers of mature flavours. Not bone dry but balanced, leading to a long, mouth-watering finish. (JH)

World Class Sparkling Wine

Having planted its first vines in West Sussex in 1988, Nyetimber was one of the forerunners of the fine English sparkling wine boom, producing traditional method sparkling wines from estate-grown Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes.

Based in the village of West Chiltington in a lea of the South Downs, Nyetimber owns vineyards in West Sussex, Hampshire and Kent, where the geology and soils – principally the same chalk seam which runs under Champagne, along with greensand – are particularly suited to producing world-class sparkling wines.

Head winemaker Cherie Spriggs and her winemaker husband Brad Greatrix work with meticulous attention to detail in the vineyards to ensure optimum fruit quality, while in the cellar, extended ageing and the benefit of an extensive collection of reserve wines ensures that each bottle leaving the winery displays a complexity and finesse which makes Nyetimber a benchmark producer of English sparkling wine.
