The 2005 Numanthia is a notable expression of the Tinta de Toro grape, originating from the Toro DO in Spain. The grapes are harvested from century-old vines, benefiting from the region`s harsh continental climate and sandy, stony terroir. This vintage offers a complex aromatic profile featuring dark fruits such as blackberry and plum, alongside layers of spice and subtle minerality. On the palate, it showcases a full-bodied structure with well-defined tannins that support concentrated flavours of fruit, licorice, and earthy notes.

Deep ruby. A deep, youthfully brooding bouquet offers dark cherry, blackcurrant, incense and suave oak spices. Spicy cherry and dark berry flavors show an exotic anise quality and slow-building sweetness. This gently tannic, chewy, extremely persistent wine finishes with echoes of oak spice and floral pastille, not to mention excellent vivacity.

The 2005 Numanthia was aged for 19 months in new French oak. Opaque purple, it has a superb perfume of violets, mineral, wood smoke, blueberry, and blackberry. This leads to a firm, very structured wine with questionable balance. The finish is long but tannic. This is a wine that demands cellaring but purchasing it is a gamble. - Jay S Miller
