Situated in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Henri Gouges is a meticulous producer of expressive, terroir-driven wines. The estate of approximately 15 hectares is currently run by Gregory and Antoine, great-grandsons of the founder Henri Gouges. This particular cuvée hails from Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges, which covers just over 3.5 hectares and is a monopole of Henri Gouges. The 2018 vintage in Burgundy was notable for its warm and dry conditions, resulting in wines of rich concentration and ripe fruit flavours. It was considered a successful vintage overall, particularly for Pinot Noir.

From a climat that was largely spared by the hail that impacted this commune, Gouges's 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets Saint Georges offers up a generous, youthfully fruit-driven bouquet of plums, raspberries and cassis mingled with subtle hints of cola and creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, pure and velvety, it's layered and fleshy, with powdery tannins and an ample core of fruit. This is a rather ripe, sumptuous, even rather heady example of the frequently rather stern Clos des Porrets Saint Georges, and in that respect, it's very typical of the vintage.William Kelley30th September 2021

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a generous mulberry, incense and lavender tinged bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is sweet and a bit "fluffy" on the entry, quite rich as expected, just missing a bit of backbone and complexity on the finish. Not a long-term bet but offers early-drinking pleasure.
