This 2015 vintage showcases the Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Cras, crafted by winemaker Georges Noellat, renowned for his expertise in delineating the characteristics of Burgundy`s terroir. The Aux Cras vineyard lies adjacent to Vosne-Romanée, imparting nuanced elegance to the Pinot Noir. The warm growing season contributed to a fruit-forward profile with 13.5% alcohol and concentrated phenolic maturity. Aged in 30% new oak, the wine retains freshness without heavy extraction. It reveals notes of black raspberries intertwined with subtle hints of incense and minerality from the underlying soils. The structure balances the robust characteristics of Nuits-Saint-Georges with a silkiness reminiscent of its Vosne counterpart.

Matured in 60% new oak, the 2015 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras has an opulent bouquet with blueberry and black cherry fruit soaring from the glass, the oak neatly integrated, although I detected just a little warmth here that detracted from the delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin. There is clearly a solid backbone to this Nuits Saint Georges that lends it a Morey-Saint-Denis-like personality. There is ample blackberry and raspberry notes infused with white pepper and sage, fanning out in confident fashion towards the detailed finish. This is a sturdy and forthright 2015 that will drink beautifully over 15-20 years. This wine is superb.

The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a comparatively exotic bouquet of red fruit infused with figs and dates; hints of maraschino cherries emerge with aeration, along with some unwanted acetone notes. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, fleshy red berry fruit laced with marmalade and light brown spice notes. The finish is just a tad drier than I was hoping for after the nose. This is a vexing showing, although Maxime Chuerlin's Les Beaux Monts is much better. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin1st November 2018
