Nino Franco was founded in 1919 in the town of Valdobbiadene and is one of the oldest wineries in the region. This bright straw-coloured wine is a delicious and deceptively complex aperitif-style drink with lovely aromas of white fruits and flowers. The palate is delicately effervescent and creamy with a tantalisingly lingering finish.

The NV Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Rustico shows a remarkably fresh and crisp bouquet full of floral-laced orchard fruits. It balances soothing textures with bright acids, minerals and ripe orchard fruits to create a pleasantly round expression, and then leaves the palate feeling completely refreshed. (Lot number L20322)

Showing a light golden color, the NV Valdobiaddene Prosecco Superiore Rustico Brut is steely, dry and tonic with lots of tart lime, unripe peach and white flower. This perky bubbly makes good use of its Brut designation with tight, spicy beading and a very direct or immediate delivery. This is an ambitious and well-priced production of 700,000 bottles.

World Class Prosecco

In a sea of unremarkable Prosecco, Cantine Franco stands out as an island of quality and individuality. Still run by the charismatic septuagenarian Primo Franco, the estate boasts vineyard holdings in some of the best sites of the Valdobbiadene zone – the birthplace of Prosecco, where the Franco family began making Prosecco wine in 1919.

The Franco estate was established in the now-famous Veneto hillside village of Valdobbiadene by Primo’s grandfather, Antonio, who was succeeded by his son, Nino. But it was when the third generation of the family, Primo, took over in 1982 that Cantine Franco really took off. The light yet exuberant Prosecco wines (typified in the low-dosage brut Rustico cuvée) produced here are above all an expression of Primo’s creative and irrepressible personality – clearly of a superior quality, they invariably possess luxuriant fruity notes, and immense second-sippability.
