Nikolaihof Ried Im Weingebirge Smaragd Grüner Veltliner 2019 is a single-site Grüner Veltliner from the Wachau region of Austria. Nikolaihof is the oldest biodynamic estate in the country, and this wine comes from one of their most historic sites, dating back to the 5th century, with clay, loess and paragneiss soils. The 2019 vintage is dense and powerful, showing concentrated yellow stone fruit, white pepper and a complex bouquet of mountain herbs, serving as a benchmark for the mineral precision of the Wachau. The wine ages on its lees in old, large casks, which imparts a creamy texture and a serious, long-lasting structure.

The 2019 Ried Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is deep, intense and aromatic on the nose that reveals flinty notes of crushed rocks (paragneiss) and ripe, yellow stone fruits. Round, smooth and refined on the palate, this is a full-bodied, elegant and savory, long and seriously structured wine from the six-hectare cru that is located within the Ried Alte Point in Mautern. The finish is savory and saline yet also quite powerful. I would recommend cellaring the wine for at least another five or seven years to integrate the tannins that still stand out in the finish. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2025. - Stephan Reinhardt

Mautern. Part of Alte Point; loess over paragneiss at 208–225 m in elevation. Certified Sustainable Austria and biodynamic (Dementer).

This has aged well, with beeswax breadth filled in with lightly honeyed, slightly nutty and definitely saline flavours, like salted-almond nougat. It`s quiet and restrained, as is the house style here, and very pretty, with wildflower aromas lending lift and freshness. Lasts, even-keeled.
