Nikolaihof Hefeabzug Grüner Veltliner 2010 is a mature Wachau white wine that exemplifies the character of this esteemed Austrian variety. Known for its salty minerality, this wine exhibits a delicate interplay between crisp fruit notes and subtle herbal undertones. The term Hefeabzug highlights the wine`s ageing on fine lees, enhancing its texture and dimensionality while retaining a clean finish. High acidity and pronounced minerality are notable traits of this vintage. Nikolaihof, one of Austria’s oldest wineries, has been committed to biodynamic farming since 1971, cultivating grapes from diverse soils around Mautern in the Wachau.

Despite early-harvest, the Nikolaihof 2010 Gruner Veltliner Hefeabzug weighs-in at, for this bottling, relatively robust over-12% alcohol, which is all the more surprising considering that this wine has seldom exhibited a more delightful sense of levity. There is almost a sweet sense to the crisp green bean, apple, and pear succulently displayed on a lushly-textured, lees-enriched palate. A refreshing thread of lemon juice and a sense of crushed stone suffusion speak to the brightness and mineral density characteristic for this vintage at its best, while a bittersweet, Pinot Blanc-like suggestion of corn shoots adds to the stimulation of a long finish. This should prove delightfully versatile for at least the better part of half a dozen years. - David Schildknecht
