The Napanook 2002 is the second wine of Dominus Estate, an enterprise led by Christian Moueix, renowned for his expertise at Château Pétrus. This vintage is primarily a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The growing conditions in Napa Valley during 2002 were notably favourable, allowing for optimal grape ripening. In the glass, Napanook 2002 showcases a garnet hue, while its aromas include dark fruit, spices, and subtle earthy notes. The palate reveals structured tannins, with lingering flavours of berry and a hint of oak. The fruit for this wine is sourced from the historic Napanook Vineyard in Yountville.

Dominus is a large vineyard, and they have the ability to make a strict selection. Their second wine, Napanook, continues to get better and better. The 2002 Napanook (2,400 cases from a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec) is more structured and tannic than the 2003, but also deeper colored with additional notes of plum liqueur, black currants, underbrush, cedar, and licorice. Full-bodied, rich, and powerful, this impressive effort requires 1-3 years of cellaring, and will drink well over the following 12-15 years.
One of the interesting things at Dominus is that when I do my tastings they open and decant the same wines the day before, and the wines with extended aeration always reveal more complexity and sweeter tannin than the just opened bottles, a characteristic purchasers should take into consideration. Decanting several hours in advance is recommended. Kudos to the brilliant Christian Moueix for these achievements ... the most distinctive and individualist Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines of Napa Valley.

90 Vinous
Aromas of black fruits, licorice, cedar, leather and bitter chocolate, with a suggestion of dehydrated berries. Intense flavors of black cherry, fresh herbs and licorice, framed by firm acids. Could use a bit more sweetness of fruit. Finishes with powerful spine and a hint of unabsorbed acidity.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2005

A First Growth in Napa
Along with Opus One, Dominus is one of the greatest examples of applying the Bordelais approach to winemaking to the great vineyards of the Napa Valley. Grapes are sourced from Yountville, specifically the historic Napanook vineyard, from which the winery's second wine takes its name.
The 'Grand Vin' is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot - a classic Bordeaux blend. After vinification, around 30% of the wine is loaded into new oak barrels for 15 months before bottling. Initial releases of Dominus met with mixed reviews, but since the late 1990s, the winery has established itself as one of the greatest in America.
