Based at the Château de Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is a family-owned estate producing some of the finest wines of the Côte de Nuits. The Musigny Grand Cru is made from the family’s 1.14-hectare parcel, which is entirely situated within the section known as ‘Grand-Musigny’. All of the vines here were planted between 1947 and 1962, producing small, high-quality berries. The 2015 vintage experienced a warm and dry growing season, resulting in ripe and concentrated grapes with good phenolic maturity.

Readers may remember my admiration for the 2015 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru shortly after it was bottled. Today, as the wine is released onto the market, my enthusiasm is undiminished, as the wine is showing superbly, unfurling in the glass with a deep bouquet of cherries, raspberries, rose petals, exotic spices, orange rind and hints of smoked duck and forest floor. Full-bodied, deep and layered, it's seamless and complete, with terrific concentration, powdery tannins and lively animating acids that come together in an effortless ensemble. Concluding with a broad, expansive finish, five years in Mugnier's cellars before release haven't brought the wine to anywhere near its ultimate peak, but they have at least given a sense of the direction of travel!William Kelley31st January 2023

A big, ripe, buxom, sumptuous Burgundy. The nose is exuberant with black fruit, as is the palate. Right now this wine is like a warm blackberry sorbet. The long finish and the tannic backbite foretell a long life. At this point the warm vintage dominates the vineyard, but this wine has all the ingredients for brilliant development. Precision and Beauty

Located the famous Château de Chambolle-Musigny, which has been owned by the Mugniers since the mid 19th century, Frédéric Mugnier took the hem at the family winery in 1985. Frédéric farms around 35 acres of vines, including plantings in some of Burgundy's most desirable crus, most notably the famous Les Amoureuses Premier Cru and Musigny Grand Cru. A notable recent addition to the portfolio is Clos de la Maréchale in Nuits-St-George, returned to the family stable after a 54 lease to Domaine Faiveley.

The winemaking is methodical and reasoned, reflecting Frédéric's training as an engineer - all fruit is destemmed before crushing, new oak is limited to 25% and all wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bucking the trend somewhat, Frédéric has decided not to pursue organic or biodynamic certification. While pesticide and herbicide-free since the mid-1990s, the domaine take a pragmatic approach to vineyard management rather than a dogmatic one.
