Located in the village of Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Georges Roumier is one of the region’s finest wine producers. The estate was originally founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, who began domaine bottling in 1945. This particular release is their Musigny Grand Cru from 2014, a vintage that offered bright fruits and classic mineral notes, underscored by an attractive freshness.

Good dark red. Very dark, liqueur-like nose hints at sandalwood, mulch and minerals. Thick, plush and deep, delivering great depth of texture for the year. But this youthfully chocolatey, remarkably dense--even thick--wine comes across as lower-pitched than some of the Chambolle wines here, in need of long aging to absorb some of its baby fat. Exotic spice and earth tones emerged as the wine opened in the glass. With its plush, broad tannins totally coated by fruit, this amazingly tactile wine is hard to scrape off the palate. It will merit an even higher score if aging brings out more mineral and floral high notes and definition.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2017

Domaine Georges Roumier

A Icon of Fine Burgundy

One of Burgundy's most famous producers - founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, the domaine was passed to his son Jean-Marie in 1957 and eventually on to his grandson Christophe in the early 1990s. Vines are either rented from family members or managed on a share-cropping basis and the cellar team operate a dynamic approach to winemaking, subtly altering their techniques depending on the vineyard and vintage. Some fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation while some is partially destemmed. A cool maceration takes place before fermentation, which takes place in wooden vats, and punch downs happen twice a day. Use of new oak is judicious - only around 20% for the village wines, 35% for the Premier Crus and 50% for the Grand Crus.

If Georges Roumier only produced Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Clos St Denis, the winery would still be considered one of the greatest in Burgundy, but their other-worldly Musigny Grand Cru elevates their status among the great wineries of France to legendary.
