Good deep red. Knockout aromas of crushed dark fruits, peony and perfumed oak (this is actually aging in a one-year-barrel but smells oakier than that). Thick, dense and layered but youthfully imploded today, offering sappy, pungent flavors of blueberry, violet, white pepper and smoky, salty minerality. Combines the power of the Amoureuses and the gracefulness of the Bonnes-Mares. But this wine's youthful tannins call for a good 12 to 15 years of cellaring. My score may eventually look overly conservative.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2013

The 2010 Musigny is at times delicate, understated, exotic and flashy. In reality, all of those elements are present at the same time. The Musigny possesses the most regal, polished of fruit supported by sweet, silky tannins that are dazzling. The operative word here is finesse, and the 2010 has it in spades. Sweet, candied notes linger in the empty glass. This is a great showing from Christophe Roumier. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2050.

The only real problem with Christophe Roumier’s 2010s is the production, which was severely compromised by the December 2009 frost and the poor weather of 2010, especially during the flowering. On a more positive note, the wines are marked by their total transparency. Some of the entry-level wines are a bit on the light side, but the best 1er Crus and the Grand Crus are magical. Roumier started picking on September 28. Some of the wines were lightly chaptalized. I will report on the 2009s in our April issue.

Domaine Georges Roumier

A Icon of Fine Burgundy

One of Burgundy's most famous producers - founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, the domaine was passed to his son Jean-Marie in 1957 and eventually on to his grandson Christophe in the early 1990s. Vines are either rented from family members or managed on a share-cropping basis and the cellar team operate a dynamic approach to winemaking, subtly altering their techniques depending on the vineyard and vintage. Some fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation while some is partially destemmed. A cool maceration takes place before fermentation, which takes place in wooden vats, and punch downs happen twice a day. Use of new oak is judicious - only around 20% for the village wines, 35% for the Premier Crus and 50% for the Grand Crus.

If Georges Roumier only produced Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Clos St Denis, the winery would still be considered one of the greatest in Burgundy, but their other-worldly Musigny Grand Cru elevates their status among the great wineries of France to legendary.
