Château Mouton Rothschild 2011 is a First Growth Bordeaux from the one of the most illustrious names in Pauillac. Established in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild pioneered the idea of estate bottling in the 1920s while other properties were still selling and exporting in barrel. Cabernet Sauvignon always predominates in the Mouton red, giving the wine its rich tannins, wealth of aroma, flavour and superb ageing capacity. Meanwhile Merlot brings suppleness, roundness and exceptional length. "Tight, focused and very well-built, this shows the quality of this sleeper vintage. Built on tannins that have a twinge of austerity, this offers ample flesh to the dark currant, fig and blackberry fruit. Bramble, tobacco and loam accents fill in through the finish, which has a lingering tug of dark earth at the very end. This one may never be a charmer but it has aging potential for sure." The 2011 Mouton-Rothschild feels surprisingly reduced on the nose and needed a lot of coaxing. Leather, mocha, liquorice develops in the glass, quite bretty compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy and ripe, that mocha translating over from the nose, minty with touches of white pepper on the finish. 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc. Deep crimson. Exotically spiced, warm red fruits. Exotic, prettily aromatic, delicate and pretty gentle on the palate. Subtle and harmonious. Cedary freshness and a fluidity on the finish and a note of oak char at the very end. It seems just so soft but Philippe Dhalluin assures us the tannins (or at least the polyphenol index) is very similar to last year so I am giving it the benefit of the doubt. (JH)
